The American militairy base in Guantánamo Bay could be seen from the lookout tower

If you drive to Baracoa from Guantanamo, after about 25km you will see the following sign on the right side of the road

Here you must immediately turn left and you end up at
a restaurant with a watchtower

It`s also the only restaurant along the way between Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa
(a route of 250km)

From here you have a view on boats and buildings of the
U.S. military base Guantanamo Bay

Guantánamo Bay (Spanish: Bahía de Guantánamo) is a bay located in Guantánamo Province at the southeastern end of Cuba

It is the largest harbor on the south side of the island and it is surrounded by steep hills which create an enclave that is cut off from its immediate hinterland

The United States assumed territorial control over the southern portion of Guantánamo Bay under the 1903 Cuban–American Treaty

The United States exercises complete jurisdiction and control over this territory, while recognizing that Cuba retains ultimate sovereignty

The current government of Cuba regards the U.S. presence in Guantánamo Bay as illegal and insists the Cuban–American Treaty was obtained by threat
of force and is in violation of international law

Guantánamo Bay Naval Base (also called Gitmo or GTMO) is located
on 45 square miles (120 km2) of land and water at Guantánamo Bay

It`s the oldest overseas U.S. Naval Base, and the only U.S. military installation in a country with whom the United States
has no diplomatic relations

Since 2002, the naval base has contained a military prison, the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, for alleged unlawful combatants captured in
Afghanistan, Iraq, and other places

Cases of torture of prisoners, and their denial of protection under the Geneva Conventions, has been condemned international

In 1986, Guantanamo became host to the first and
only McDonald's restaurant within Cuba
