In Cuba insecticide DDD is sprayed in homes against the Dengue mosquito

We thought there was a fire on the market in the center of Sancti Spiritus

It turned out the houses were fumigated with DDD against the Dengue mosquito

Dengue fever also known as breakbone fever, is a mosquito-borne tropical disease
caused by the dengue virus

Symptoms are fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and
a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles

In a small proportion of cases the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs

Dengue is transmitted by several species of mosquito

Treatment of acute dengue is supportive, using either oral or
intravenous rehydration for mild or moderate disease,
and intravenous fluids and blood transfusion for more severe cases

The number of cases of dengue fever has increased dramatically since the 1960s, with between 50 and 528 million people infected yearly

Dengue has become a global problem since the Second World War
and is endemic in more than 110 countries

Apart from eliminating the mosquitoes, work is ongoing on a vaccine, as well as medication targeted directly at the virus

Very unhealthy but everyone just stood there while the DDD
was sprayed and the bird whistled merrily...

Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD) is an organochlorine insecticide
that is slightly irritating to the skin

DDD is a metabolite of DDTDDD is colorless and crystallineIt is closely related chemically and is similar in properties to DDT, but it is considered
to be less toxic to animals than is DDT

DDD is in the “Group B2” classification, meaning that it is a probable human carcinogen

This is based on an increased incidence of lung tumors in male and female mice, liver tumors in male mice, and thyroid tumors in male rats

Further basis is that DDD is so similar to and is a metabolite of DDT,
another probable human
