de San Carlos de la Cabaña in Havana is one of the largest and best preserved
fortresses of Latin America
The Fort known as La Cabaña is an eighteenth century
fort complex, located on the eastern side of the harbor entrance in Havana
Construction
of La Cabaña started in 1763 by King Carlos III of Spain, the controlling
colonial power of Cuba, because he realized that the city wasn`t defended good
enough
The fort was the last 200 years used as a military base and prison and during the Batista regime as a military prison
In January 1959, the rebels of Fidel Castro took possession of La Cabaña
Che Guevara used the fort several months as the headquarters and
military prison
The complex is part of a historical park with the El Morro fort
Every night at 20:45, a military ceremony held with old uniforms
Every evening at 21.00 rumbles a cannon shot, called " El Cañonazo de las 9',
a habit from colonial times as a signal that the doors were closing
in the city wall
From the fort you have splendid views of Havana Vieja and the Malecon
