It was
very special to see yellow Dutch Arriva and Connextion buses in Cuba with a
Dutch destination
These old buses are donated to Cuba but nothing was changed on
these buses
Even the Dutch information number 0900 was still on the bus
You have plenty old American cars around the island
Parts for these cars are no longer to get in Cuba and everything
should be self-made
The coating depends sometimes of tape to each other
Lots of rust we saw on the cars
We saw old motorcycles with sidecars with whole families in it, pedicab `s and many horses and carriages
The horses were all very skinny
We saw a lot of riders on horseback galloping along the way
Trucks serve as public transport
There is a ladder hanging at the back of the truck and a rod made to hold on to because seats are not usually
Trains sometimes have a day’s delay
Along the highway were gathering points where people were hitchhiking
Officials were specially appointed to arrange that no car drove by with an empty seat
In eastern Cuba we have seen almost no paved roads and
they were full of holes
Some holes were so large that a car could disappear
We wondered if they drive when it`s raining because
than you don`t see the holes
Luckily we had always sunny weather…
Sometimes suppliers with bananas and oranges stood in
the middle of the highway
Driving down the road was an experience in itself
I was always glad we were on the road with a Cuban driver
There were almost no signs or lampposts and petrol pumps were also particular
